The Victoria small town of Woodend lies in the Shire of Macedon region of the state, mid-way between Bendigo and Melbourne. It was first laid out as a town in 1836 by Major Thomas Mitchell, developing on the back of a gold rush in the area close to Bendigo. Today the population is in excess of 5,500, but at one time it had its own very successful racecourse, although today the Woodend Cup is held at Kyneton Racecourse, normally on the first Saturday in February. |

Principal Races | Woodend Cup |
The Woodland Racing Club held their inaugural meeting on Friday 18th March 1870 on the racecourse at the back of the town, in a very picturesque location, commanding a view over an extensive range of very romantic scenery, including Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon. However, on the negative side, the course was very undulating so as to be disagreeable for most horses. The feature races in the early days were the Dalhousie Handicap and the Newhamshire Handicap. In 1873 the Racing Club introduced the Woodend Cup for the first time, run over 3 times the course and the distance, about 2 miles in total. |
